Discerning the Incremental Value of Education: Moving From Intuition to Fact
By Jennifer Moss, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Bellevue University Human Capital Lab
When discussing the value of learning, most of us sit solidly on one side of a very tall fence. Either education is valued as a “given”, not needing justification for its existence, or, education must be quantified, and therefore, only of value if we can put some concrete value on its delivery. With regard to tuition assistance, those who are responsible for making decisions about their human capital investments usually sit solidly on either side of this fence. As Economy Wavers, Online Enrollments Climb
By Andy Guess, Inside Higher Ed, November 13, 2008
Researchers who study online education tend to believe that the staggering growth in enrollments seen over the past several years can’t continue apace forever. According to a study released Wednesday, they’ll have to wait at least another year for the predicted flattening. Click here for the full article.

    Free Webinar: Proactive Talent Management Strategies to Address Long-Term Workforce Needs
    Many healthcare employers struggle with the cost of employee turnover and look for ways to improve retention. Turnover, coupled with the shortage of qualified employees, threatens their ability to provide quality care. CAEL’s work with healthcare employers has demonstrated that addressing these challenges requires coordination of talent management strategies. Linking best practices in management of tuition assistance programs with effective education partnerships and the design and implementation of career ladders are proven approaches to effect change in the healthcare workforce.

    Phyllis Snyder and John Zappa, Vice Presidents at CAEL, and Judy Schueler, Vice President of Organizational Development and Chief Human Resources Officer at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, will provide examples of how they have worked to implement programs that provide information, access and support to incumbent and newly hired workers to advance in their careers through:

  • Increasing the value of tuition assistance programs by linking them to a talent management strategy;
  • Strategic partnerships with higher education institutions to ensure appropriate and cost effective education, and;
  • Development of nursing and allied health career pathways that are linked with the competencies needed to advance.

    Managing Talent through Career Advising
    Most employers recognize assisting employees to make the right education choices leverages tuition expenses and helps grow and manage talent. But what is included in career advising? How can it help someone create a career plan or an education plan? What are the components of an advising program? How can advising be integrated with tuition assistance? How can advising be aligned with an employer’s organizational development needs? Is there a value in outsourcing career advising? Dorothy Wax, Director of CAEL Career Services and Catherine Raines from CPP, Inc. answer these questions and demonstrate how to use the Strong and MBTI® Career Report, which provides your employees with a complete career development picture based on a combined interpretation of their interests and personality. Listen to the recording here. For more information about career advising contact Dorothy Wax at dmwax@cael.org.
